Escape Artists has acquired the rights to a first-person essay published in January in the New York Times as a producing and potential starring vehicle for Denzel Washington. Jonathan Burnham Schwartz will write the script. The project, Journal for Jordan, is based on Dana Canedy's essay, which describes a 200-page journal penned by her fiance, 1st Sgt. Charles Monroe King, for their son. The 48-year-old soldier was killed in Baghdad in October, one month shy of finishing his tour of duty. He had left for the Middle East before his son was born. Miramax Films is developing Boy in the Striped Pajamas, the story of a German family living in the town of Auschwitz based on John Boyne's novel, and set it up with David Heyman's Heyday Films to produce. Vera Farmiga (The Departed) will star. Filmmaker Mark Herman (Little Voices) is set to begin shooting in Budapest at the end of April, with Miramax's Daniel Battsek eyeing an end-of-the-year awards run. Herman wrote the adapted screenplay. It's only the second inhouse production solely owned by Miramax that Battsek has greenlit after Gone, Baby, Gone, Ben Affleck's directorial debut. which Neil Burger (The Illusionist) will direct. Lionsgate will
distribute and is eyeing a December release. Filming starts in May.
Burger co-wrote the screenplay with Dirk Wittenborn. The story follows

Sony is bringing Konami's hit videogame franchise Metal Gear Solid to the big screen.
Metal Gear Solid has sold more than 20 million units since 1998, but its roots date back even further; the first "Metal Gear" game came out in 1987. The stealth action title became one of the industry's biggest hits and has four sequels, the last three of which came out under the "Metal Gear Solid" moniker. Another sequel is set for release this year.
Michael De Luca will produce the adaptation, with videogame creator Hideo Kojima as executive producer.
