Interview: 'Wanted' Director Timur Bekmambetov
Posted on Jun 27 2008 5:07 AM by Aziz

After the record-breaking success of Night Watch and Day Watch (and an early film for B-movie maven Roger Corman, Arena), Khazakstan-born, Russia-based director Timur Bekmambetov makes his English-language big-studio debut with Wanted, a bruising, brawny action film starring James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie.

Award-Winning 'Elite Squad' to Hit Theaters and VOD Simultaneously
Posted on Jun 27 2008 5:05 AM by Aziz

With the film industry so busy that even the art houses are having trouble finding room for the indies they want to show, some execs are starting to look at more creative ways of getting their movies seen. That's why the Weinstein Co. is handing over one of its products to IFC Films, which will release it later this year in theaters and -- on the same day -- through Video-on-Demand, right into people's homes.

Stars in Rewind: Big Screen Adventures in Gonzo Journalism

After watching the clip from Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson that Erik posted, I couldn't help but think of the fictionalized Hunter S. Thompson on the big screen.

Sienna Miller's New Cleavage: G.I. Whoa!
Posted on Jun 27 2008 5:03 AM by Aziz

Fair warning: This is a slight, trivial, and practically meaningless piece of upcoming movie news -- but it touches on three things we love here at Cinematical: Action movies based on cartoons based on ancient marketing campaigns, horny directors, and fake breasts.

Brangelina Options International Prom Article?
Posted on Jun 26 2008 5:35 AM by Aziz

This past Sunday, The New York Times featured a popular City-section story about the first-ever prom held for students of Brooklyn's International High School. In case you don't like to read, you can simply watch the video accompaniment here. And if you don't like to read and you don't like documentary-style videos, and have a lot of patience, you can wait for the feature film, which will apparently be hitting theaters some time in the future.

Review: The Love Guru
Posted on Jun 20 2008 3:36 AM by Aziz

If you don't count his vocal work in the Shrek films, The Love Guru marks the return of Mike Myers to the big screen after a five-year absence. Last seen in 2003's The Cat in the Hat, Myers is now unveiling -- or is that unleashing? -- a new character, Guru Pitka, a self-help maven who brings the spiritual teachings he learned from Guru Tugginmypudha (Ben Kingsley) in India to America.

Ooooh, Teaser Logos for Marvel Slate
Posted on Jun 13 2008 5:50 AM by Aziz

I've gotten excited over teaser trailers without any footage. I've even gotten excited over teaser posters with nothing more than a title (and the words "coming soon") on them. But I never thought I'd get excited over a mere title graphic alone -- no trailer, no poster, no nothing, save for a logo and a release year. Well, that's what just happened.

Is Paul Thomas Anderson Making a 'Power Play'?
Posted on Jun 11 2008 5:00 AM by Aziz

As rumors go, at least the latest one surrounding director Paul Thomas Anderson makes a lot more sense than some of the other talk surrounding the gifted director. The Anderson fan site, Cigarettes and Red Vines, has reported on a rumor that's been gaining speed over the last few days: namely,.....

'Beverly Hills Cop 4' Will Be For Kids
Posted on Jun 04 2008 4:08 AM by Aziz

And you thought the announcement of Beverly Hills Cop IV meant Eddie Murphy was returning to his old potty mouth days. Well, think again, movie fans. The director who ruined the X-Men franchise and the studio that nearly ruined the Indiana Jones franchise is about to ruin the Beverly Hills Cop franchise. Unless the third one already did that (I actually skipped it, so I'm unsure).

Inconvenient Measures to Combat 'Indiana Jones' Pirates
Posted on May 29 2008 5:10 AM by Aziz

The nomadic DVD peddlers in Chinatown and other urban areas seem virtually unstoppable, but that hasn't kept Hollywood studios from launching various attempts to prevent movie piracy. Boing Boing reports on the rumor that at least one theater has been silencing the soundtrack in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull throughout the film in order to mess with potential bootleggers trying to record the thing.

RvB's After Images: Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster (1965)
Posted on May 27 2008 7:12 AM by Aziz

NASA's Phoenix lander has its rendezvous with Mars, and that, as well as the upcoming Puerto Rican primary, gives a torn-from-today's-weblogs quality to this purported horror film, aka'd both as Mars Attacks Puerto Rico and Mars Invades Puerto Rico. But Frankenstein Meets The Space Monster is a film for all seasons anyway.

Another Clip from 'The Incredible Hulk'

The Incredible Hulk Exclusive Clip

A bunch of clips from the upcoming The Incredible Hulk have been scattered all over the Internet for Memorial Day weekend. We linked to both the MTV clip and Yahoo's clip the other day, and now there's another one up at MySpace (which also happens to be the same one IGN was carrying). The Yahoo one is the most spectacular because Hulk fashions boxing gloves out of a common, every day object. He may not say "Hulk Smash!" but here, action speaks louder.

Indies on DVD: 'Meeting Resistance,' 'Beyond Hatred,' 'The Flock'
Posted on May 21 2008 8:31 AM by Aziz

Quick hits on three titles of interest: As I wrote last November, Meeting Resistance "is not the end-all, be-all of Iraq War documentaries, nor does it pretend to be. Filmmakers Steve Connors and Molly Bingham stay tightly focused on their subjects -- members of the resistance movement in Iraq -- and get them to open up about their motivations. In doing so, they provide an invaluable window into a world that remains unknown to most foreigners." The DVD from First Run Features includes an audio commentary, filmmaker Q&A, biographies, and a photo gallery.

Jack Black is Down for 'The School of Rock 2'
Posted on May 21 2008 8:29 AM by Aziz

Something in the water over in France has got Jack Black loose-lipped. First he lets it out that Angelina is indeed having twins. Now, according to film-industry.biz, he's claiming there's a sequel to School of Rock in the works. There's even a script already written, and Black is anxious to return to the role of music teacher Dewey Finn. But it's not a done deal just yet. As he explained from the Cannes Film Festival: "In a few weeks we have to decide if we go through with the project or not."

Review: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Posted on May 20 2008 6:16 AM by Aziz

Everyone's favorite whip-cracking archaeologist is back, and I found myself trying to keep a very even keel as the lights went down for Indiana Jones' latest series of exploits: On one hand I didn't want to be "too nice" to the movie (nostalgia power does strange things to people), but I was more than willing to fall in love with the flick, too.
