'Marshall' aims to inspire

"We Are Marshall" is a football movie that isn't really about football, yet somehow manages to perpetuate every cliche of the genre.

Based on the true story of the 1970 Marshall University team, which lost most of its players, coaches and several community leaders in a plane crash, the movie certainly has its heart in the right place, but that alone just isn't enough.

Director McG, known for the whiz-bang acrobatics of his "Charlie's Angels" movies, applies a warm, shiny veneer to everything here which prevents any emotion from getting through. There's none of his trademark elan here, except perhaps for the unexpected choice of Crosby Stills & Nash's "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" during the obligatory training montage....more click on heading

Night at Museum is a Real Noisy Show
Posted on Dec 20 2006 11:38 PM by Zek Mike
Filed Under: PG ,

As Dr. Seuss‘ Grinch said, "One thing I can‘t stand is the noise, noise, noise, noise!"

That‘s mostly what Ben Stiller and company have to offer with his latest comedy, "Night at the Museum," the story of a night watchman dealing with dinosaur skeletons, statues and wax figures that come to life at a museum.

Other than the basic plot point of inanimate creatures coming alive and some occasionally inventive visual effects, "Night at the Museum" is unimaginative and annoying, as movies by director Shawn Levy ("Cheaper by the Dozen," "The Pink Panther") often are.Stiller is stiffer and blander than usual, and the comic talents of Levy‘s decent supporting cast, including Steve Coogan and Ricky Gervais , generally are wasted.....more click on heading

New Rocky Film Fights for Respect
Posted on Dec 15 2006 1:03 AM by Steve

We‘ve all experienced this during the coming attractions: Hollywood puts forth a dramatic, inspiring pitch for an upcoming production — and everybody laughs. That hasn‘t blindsided the film‘s 60-year-old star, however.

"I understand, I do. I totally get it. They‘re going to have that polarization," Sylvester Stallone told The Associated Press when asked about audience reactions. "My hope is that people that have screened it have enjoyed it and say,

You know what? It‘s not as bad as you think.‘" Stallone‘s comeback bid is part of a larger trend of aging stars revisiting dormant franchises. Sharon Stone , 48, earlier this year again crossed her legs for "Basic Instinct 2," 14 years after the original. Harrison Ford , 64, wants to make another "Indiana Jones" (which last was in theaters in 1989) and more than a decade later, Bruce Willis , 51, thinks he can "Die Hard" again...more click on heading

Speleers proved dragon-worthy for 'Eragon'
Posted on Dec 12 2006 9:02 AM by Vicetra

In a town where no one even disses their caterer, newcomer Edward Speleers is already trash-talking his co-star in the new film, "Eragon."

"Basically, I got to work with an orange tennis ball that represented a dragon," says the 19-year-old Brit. "Sadly, there were a few days where I really had to use my imagination because in the end it was just an orange tennis ball."

"Eragon" is based on the best-selling fantasy books about a friendly dragon. A farm lad (Speleers) finds a dragon egg and suddenly he's on an epic journey to save his home from an evil king. Speleers hasn't seen his own home for the last month.

"I feel like a rock star because I've been talking about the film in a lot of cities," he says. "The only thing is I don't get to sleep until noon. So, I'm like a rock star without the perks or the guitar.”

Rocky Balboa is going out like a bullet

After Rocky V left Stallone feeling as if the movie series had hit the canvas, he loves the way the latest and final film allows some cinematic closure for the gritty Philly fighter.

“I wasn’t happy with the fifth one,” Stallone said Monday night at Lincoln Financial Field where the Eagles played Carolina. All the freezing front-row fans at Monday night’s game still seemed to love Philly’s favorite fictional son, chanting, and “Rocky!” “Rocky!” at Stallone during pre-game warm-ups. It’s the kind of reception the 60 year old actor or is it the character receives everywhere in Philadelphia. Even former Eagles player Hugh Douglas stopped by the TV broadcast booth to meet Stallone...more click on heading

Sweet Land is a love story. Inge, played by Elizabeth Reaser arrives in the United States into not so welcoming arms. The small farm community in which her future husband Olaf, played by Tim Guinee, lives is unsettled by the fact that she is a German World War I refugee. Besides the unrest in the community, there are also many other factors preventing their marriage, including language and proper documents. The process of overcoming these obstacles alienates them from the community leaving them to harvest their crop completely by hand and alone. This particular harvest season brought not only work, but love as well. One could say their love grew from a seed burried in the ground to something miraculous that you'd never expect; not unlike the crops they raised.

As of October 13, 2006 Sweet Land is currently in theaters across the nation.
