MGM's Parent hires Cale Boyter
Posted on Mar 27 2008 10:20 AM by adnana

In her first creative hire since becoming head of MGM's worldwide motion picture group, Mary Parent has brought in New Line Cinema executive Cale Boyter as exec veep of production -- a move which casts a shadow over the future of chief operating officer Rick Sands.
Boyter's hire begins the makeover of MGM under Parent, who has a mandate from chairman-CEO Harry Sloan to build a creative staff that will generate a homegrown slate of feature films. Sloan and Parent are expected to do so without Sands, whose role was usurped by Parent's appointment earlier this month (Daily Variety, March 14).

Neither MGM nor Sands would comment. While there are rumors that Sands is working on his exit, he is still coming to work and has met with Parent in an effort to divide responsibilities. Sands, the former chief operating officer of DreamWorks and Miramax, was brought in by Sloan in 2006 to leverage the MGM library for distribution platforms and to create new content opportunities for the studio.

Kevin Tancharoen Directing "Fame" Remake
Posted on Mar 13 2008 6:19 AM by adnana

Lakeshore Entertainment and MGM have signed on Kevin Tancharoen to make his feature-length directorial debut with Fame, a remake of the kitschy 1980 Alan Parker-directed drama.

According to Variety, just like the original, the updated Fame follows the lives of students who attend an elite school for the performing arts in New York from audition to graduation.

Aside from uncovering new talent with open casting calls that will begin on both coasts within the next month, producers Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi feel they've been given the chance to make a discovery in the director's chair as well.

Tancharoen, 23, has a strong track record as a dancer-choreographer. He directed, co-created and co-produced the MTV series Twentyfourseven and DanceLife and was dance director on the CW series Search for the Next Pussycat Doll. Tancharoen has been the choreographer of music videos and tours for such artists as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Jessica Simpson.

Production is set to begin Labor Day.

Back in BLACK CHRISTMAS
Posted on Dec 21 2006 12:05 AM by Blogging Maria
Filed Under: MGM ,

Tired of all the warm and fuzzy Christmas movies typically released during the holidays? The horror genre has kept its bloody hands off the season’s neck for long enough. This year, whether you think they’ve trod on sacred ground or believe it was a perfect choice for a remake, Glen Morgan and James Wong are delivering us the gift of an R-rated BLACK CHRISTMAS.

Opening Christmas Day—a distinction Bob Clark’s original film never received back in 1974, and one that has led to protests from religious organizations—this updated version is not a huge departure (the story is essentially the same), but neither is it meant to be a redundant copy of an aging classic with a glossy finish, like some remakes tend to be. THE OMEN, anyone? No takers? Didn’t think so....more click on heading
