SDCC: James Gunn to Invade Xbox, Reality TV, and Ben Stiller
Posted on Jul 29 2008 6:21 AM by Aziz

From Troma to indie superheroes to to cartoon adaptations to big-time monster-fests, James Gunn is a filmmaker I like to keep an eye on from time to time. I find his Slither to be a supremely entertaining mixture of comedy and horror, his The Specials a very funny little comedy (at least a whole lot funnier than the similar Mystery Men),...

SDCC Review: The Midnight Meat Train
Posted on Jul 28 2008 7:52 AM by Aziz

Easily the best Clive Barker adaptation since the first Hellraiser film, Ryuhei Kitamura's The Midnight Meat Train is so absolutely a "horror fans only" experience that I'm not surprised that Lionsgate wants to give it only a cursory theatrical release before dumping it into DVD.

'Hairspray' Sequel, 'Rocky Horror' Remake In The Works
Posted on Jul 25 2008 4:53 AM by Aziz

As pleasantly surprised as I was by last summer's musical remake of Hairspray, I can't say that the prospect of sequel potential ever once came to mind. Thankfully, that's why we have Hollywood bean counters and the like,.....

Review: The X-Files: I Want To Believe
Posted on Jul 25 2008 4:51 AM by Aziz

The X-Files: I Want to Believe offers the viewer many mysteries to contemplate -- and only one of them is on-screen; as David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson return to roles and a franchise that last graced our TV screens in 2002 (and was last on the big screen in 1998), your mind swirls around the behind-the-scenes facts as

Comic-Con '08: Scott's Most Geekily Anticipated
Posted on Jul 15 2008 6:30 AM by Aziz

I've been to a few conventions before, here in Philly, a couple in New York, and one hazy weekend in legendary Mesquite, Texas. Horror, sci-fi, comic books, and tons of awesome geeks enjoying their own personal flavor of colorful nerd-dom. I enjoy these events, even though my own style of fandom prohibits me from dressing up like Bib Fortuna or Jayne Cobb. (I like to be amicably cynical at these events, so if I happen to make fun of your Buffy costume, please understand it's all in good fun.)

Asian Cinema Scene: Death by Nintendo DS Lite?
Posted on Jul 11 2008 5:40 AM by Aziz

Just when you thought it was safe to go on a cruise, a teenage girl goes psychotic and tries to kill you with her handheld video game machine. That's the basic premise of the upcoming Japanese teen horror flick Twilight Syndrome: Dead Cruise, whose unusual twist is that "a vindictive bullying victim named Eri (Saki Terashima) ...

Bertino Goes Rogue for Two More Pictures
Posted on Jul 10 2008 6:19 AM by Aziz

Considering that Rogue Pictures was content with bumping back writer-director Bryan Bertino's feature debut, The Strangers, countless times, only for it to turn around and gross a commendable $52 million, it seems appropriate that the studio throws the man a bone with a two-picture deal and seven figures for each.

Hmm, I don't remember any of this week's noteworthy indie DVD releases playing at theaters in my area, so why don't we catch up together and decide what to rent? Listed (roughly) in order of critical favor:

Empire has been given an exclusive new photo from the highly anticipated remake of The Wolf Man. Click the photo to the right to see the whole thing, and then feel free to begin eagerly anticipating April even more than you already are. (Woohoo, April!) The pic respresents the first official non-lupine look at Benicio del Toro as Lawrence Talbot.

'My Name is Bruce' FINALLY Hitting Theaters ... and Getting a Sequel!
Posted on Jun 26 2008 5:39 AM by Aziz

The wonderful Bubba Ho-Tep took forever to get on screens, and Bruce Campbell's My Name is Bruce is no different. As that poster on the right teases, the film was supposed to come out ages ago, but it's been sitting in the "Will it ever be seen?!" ether for a long, long time. But there's good news, Campbell fans! ShockTillYouDrop reports the film will hit theaters this October -- according to Dark Horse Comics' Mike Richardson.

Are We Ever Going to See That 'American McGee's Alice' Movie?
Posted on Jun 26 2008 5:30 AM by Aziz

Producer Scott Faye is keeping the faith -- but fans of the Electronic Arts video game American McGee's Alice will have to wait an indeterminate amount of time to see a movie version. According to McGee's own blog (and thanks to Shock for the tip), Mr. Faye has announced that Universal has placed the project into turnaround -- which essentially means it's comatose until another backer snags the property.

Surprise, Surprise: 'Mandy Lane' Gets a US One-Sheet

Believe it or not, the fight to bring All the Boys Love Mandy Lane to the big screen isn't over yet.
Almost two years ago, I watched the story of a good girl caught on a secluded ranch while people kept dying at TIFF's Midnight Madness.

Killer B's on DVD Blood and Sex Nightmare
Posted on Jun 24 2008 6:02 AM by Aziz

There's a lot to be said for truth in advertising, and few people could come away from a film called Blood and Sex Nightmare (due for release on August 5 from Bloody Earth Films) with the outraged cry: "I was expecting a carefree romp with Sandra Bullock!" Yes, this one delivers on its promise of blood and sex (often at the same time), but is that enough?
