Poor New Line execs. In trying to sanitize the more anti-religious elements of their big December release, The Golden Compass, they've managed to tick off both atheists and Christians. The December movie, starring Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig and kid newcomer Dakota Blue Richards — and based on the first book in fantasy novelist Philip Pullman's anti-church His Dark Materials trilogy — revolves around a girl's journey into a parallel world to save her young friends.

If you're a regular reader (Hi Mom!) then these titles will no doubt look a little familiar -- but the flicks haven't been released yet, so that makes 'em eligible for inclusion. (Well, that and the fact that I think they're good enough to track down.) And just so you're all caught up, here's a link for Part 1 and another for Part 2. Read the rest of this entry »

Those feverish for the follow-up to Danny Boyle's immensely successful revisionist horror film 28 Days Later will get their cake and eat it too on May 11th when Fox Atomic releases the anticipated, and aptly titled, 28 Weeks Later. This writer was granted "Atomic" clearance to view 28 minutes of the sequel's opening under the pretense that what was shown was still in its rough stages - which it was, clues being the "property of" visual burns and the wall-to-wall temp music, some taken from the soundtrack of its predecessor, to set the tone. Michael Bay will produce (and possibly direct) an adaptation of sci-fi author Whitley Strieber's upcoming novel, 2012: The War for Souls, at Warner Bros. Pictures. According to some folk traditions, 2012 is suppossedly to be a year of either great spiritual transformation -- or apocalypse. The Mayan calendar held that it would be a time when the existing world order would be reversed. Nostradamus forecasted that a rather large comet would rudely arrive on Earth's doorstep no later than 2012. The Roman Catholic Saint Malachy predicted that in 2012, the last Pope would arrive, triggering Judgment Day. Read the rest of this entry »

At this year's ShoWest in Las Vegas, Kirsten Dunst showed up to accept the ShoWest Female Star of the Year, and at the press conference that preceded the awards ceremony, the question on many minds was whether she would be willing to make another movie in the "Spider-Man" franchise. "Well, I think Sam has dedicated so much of his life, like more than ten years, to the 'Spider-Man' franchise with so much passion and love, the man is burnt out at this time," she told reporters. "I think he needs a long vacation to put his creativity towards something else and then maybe we'll revisit it. I told Sam that we should do a 'Spider-Man 4' that's completely low budget--'Evil Dead' style--where Mary Jane has eight children with very little special effects and then we'll get a whole new audience, we'd make a lot of money because it wouldn't cost as much and everyone would go see it."
